Most of us know this fuzzy green fruit as Kiwi from New Zealand, but did you know that they are not actually native from New Zealand? The fruits actually originated from China, and was brought and planted here in 1906. This is why they are first known as Chinese gooseberry, then briefly called “melonette”, and eventually renamed to “Kiwifruit” for marketing purposes. However, it is New Zealand that developed the first commercially viable Kiwifruit and developed the export markets, creating the demand for the fruit that exists today. In New Zealand, the term “Kiwi” could refer to the native bird that is the national symbol of the country, or used as a nickname for people who are from New Zealand. For me personally Kiwi was such an exotic fruit. I saw and had it for the first time when I was 10 years old. I remember being so curious at this weird fuzzy fruit that are bright green on the inside. But I loved that beautiful seed pattern on the cross section of the fruit. How cool is Hanami Dango? I am excited to share my next favorite Japanese food with you as part of my #isJapanCool series and partnership with ANA @allnipponairways_official Hanami Dango is so important to the Japanese culture that there is an emoji dedicated to it . Hanami 花見 in Japanese means “watching flowers” (Hana 花 = flowers; mi 見 = to watch) and Dango simply means rice cake. Japanese eats Dango all-year round, but this dango variation with pink, white and green color is traditionally eaten during Hanami or sakura season. The colors represents what you see during that season: pink represents the color of sky filled with pink sakura flowers , white is for any remaining snow from winter and the green is the grass that starts to grow, marking the beginning of Spring. These colors are said to represent the Japanese tradition of going to the nearest park for Hanami – to enjoy the beautiful Sakura. And this is what I think is cool about Japanese food. What is your favourite “eating around the world” memory? As a child growing up in Indonesia my mom would bring us treats from her Sunday morning trip to pasar (wet market), one of them being Onde-onde. Onde-onde is a traditional delicacy – it’s a fried dough made from glutinous rice flour covered in sesame seeds and filled with soft sweet paste. Today I learned Onde-onde has an ancient root – A similar dessert can be traced as far back to the Tang dynasty (7-9th century) in China where it was known as Jian Dui and filled with lotus or red bean paste. As people migrated southward from China, the dessert was brought along and locally adapted in various regions such as Indonesia, Hong Kong, Singapore and Malaysia, with different fillings. What I’ve known as onde-onde in Indonesia is typically filled with sweet mung beans but the one I had here is the Malaysian version known as Kuih Bom, filled with gula melaka (palm sugar) and shredded coconut. Different, yet still reminds me of home and childhood. Kampong Glam was home to Malay and Muslim aristocracy back in 1819. Today the area retains its ties to the Malay community especially with the presence of Sultan Mosque. The mosque is considered one of the most important landmark for Singaporean muslims. If you happen to be in Singapore during a religious holiday, especially the Ramadan month, you must check out this area during sunset which is the time to break fast. “I ate a dozen takoyaki by myself. I am a disgusting human being” – says me, as we were lining up for a yakitori place. . When in Osaka, you have to eat Takoyaki at Dotonbori. The entire walking street is filled with everything “Japan” – arcade, bright vertical neon signs, gashapon machines and most importantly: Takoyaki! I’ve written up a guide to Osaka – find the link on my bio above . . Takoyaki is one of the most well-known street snacks in Japan. It’s a ball-shaped snack made from a wheat-flour based batter with chopped up juicy octopus tentacles and other ingredients such as ginger and green onion, grilled in a pan with hemispherical holes to help shape it into a ball. Once done, it’s served with takoyaki sauce and Japanese mayo, then topped with crispy bonito flakes. Although you can find this all over Japan, it was popularized in Osaka. #GirlEatOsaka

I can’t say no to cute food! Since so many of you have been asking me where to get all the cute food I’ve been eating in Seoul, I’ve written a post on where to find the cutest most instagrammable desserts in Seoul! I think it’s fun and I appreciate the creativity a city has to offer through food! Thus, when I saw the LINE store in Garosu-gil, I just had to go in and get myself these macarons. We all know LINE messaging app is originated in Japan, but did you know it’s actually a subsidiary of Naver, the giant Korean internet search company? Good day, Shanghai Bingtang hu lu while strolling around The Bund. Bing tang hu lu is a candied fruit snack on skewers that is very popular in China. I love it – the taste is a wonderful mix of sweet and a tinge of sour, and the texture is a contrast of crunchy on the outside from the hard candy coating and soft in the inside from the fruit itself. I can never finish the entire skewer by myself though! It’s a bit cloudy in the picture but since then the weather in Shanghai has just been absolutely perfect! It’s a bit cold for me because I get cold very easily, but I can’t really complain with 15C, clear blue skies and sunshine. I hope you are enjoying the last day of 2016 🙂 i sure will be! ⛩⛩⛩⛩ Taiyaki at the famous Fushimi Inari from the market right outside the temple! This is my last post from the Kyoto trip, but fear not – I’m coming back to Japan with @cheapticketssg in September! Stay tuned for more Japan pics as I will be taking over their instagram too. This time I will be exploring southern area: Hiroshima, Fukuoka, Nagasaki, Kumamoto and Kagoshima. If you have any recommendations, please comment below on what I should eat. Can’t wait! — Taiyaki is one of my favorite snacks from Japan. It’s a fish-shaped cake filled with red bean paste, commonly found around Japan especially in the food stalls at a festival. Despite the shape, it doesn’t actually contain fish. Seeing the red torii (gates) ⛩ at Fushimi Inari was one of my bucketlists! I’m very glad to finally have this one checked off ✅ #cheapticketssg #visitjapan
